Josh Rouse Chester Concert reviews
Missed props and costumes
A few years ago, I saw this play in Hobby and it was much better than the one in Butte, MT. The characters were dressed in full costumes and there were full props in Butte. The play was much easier to follow and the characters were enjoyable. Throughout the play, we were sitting up in the gallery and faced big problems understanding the spoken words. trying to follow the story line was very frustrating, whether due to acoustics or speed and diction of delivery. I think there was all taped music as accompaniment, not a live orchestra. It was not mentioned in the program about an orchestra. I went with my daughter and friend, but was disappointed in this play offering, even though I loved it in Butte. In that production, the second act opened up with a beautiful African scene with the children in tow, who were the age of children. The gin joint, church, house, etc., were easily identified due to complete staging. The difference between Harpo and Albert was noticeable because of age difference and costuming, and Sophie appeared beaten up due to excellent make-up. Singers and actors were very strong, but missed the staging, costuming, and age-appropriate casting.
